LOS ANGELES, CA –
Three years after the release of his last album, Big Sean made his music return with the release of his new 21-track album ‘Detroit 2’.
The album which was released on Friday, Sept. 4 featured numerous musical appearances by artists like Post Malone, Travis Scott, Jhené Aiko, Diddy, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Royce Da 5’9, Dom Kennedy, the late Nipsey Hussle and countless others.
Artists like Stevie Wonder and Erykah Badu, along with comedian Dave Chapelle also provided interludes that appeared on the album.
Between sharing his struggles with depression and anxiety in “Deep Reverence” and rapping about his relentless grind and motivation in “Don Life”, Big Sean left no subject untouched.
In his interview with Apple Music, Big Sean told host Nadeska Alexis that this album helped him find his passion for music again.
“As I was making the album, I was returning to my passion in music because I felt like I had lost it for a little bit,” Big Sean said during the interview. “I wasn’t inspired, I was making music that wasn’t all the way inspired, (and) not liking the things I came up with and then all of a sudden the inspiration came back.”
During the interview, he also shared the inspiration behind titling his album ‘Detroit 2’ which he said came from his continued appreciation for his hometown and feeling like his 2012 mixtape ‘Detroit’ never received the recognition it deserved.
“I always wanted to do a sequel to the mixtape because I felt like it was an album. I felt like it never got its just due because it was a mixtape but it was really an album for me,” Big Sean said.
Prior to the release of his album, he released short visual previews for songs like “Don Life” and has since released three music videos including “Harder Than My Demons”, “Lithuania” featuring Travis Scott and “ZTFO”.
While promoting his album during a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) Q&A, Big Sean also revealed that another TWENTY88 album is in the works.
TWENTY88, which is a hip-hop duo comprised of Big Sean and R&B singer Jhené Aiko, released their first and only album in 2016.
