LOS ANGELES — With numerous key players becoming free agents this offseason, the Los Angeles Sparks are unsure how their roster for the 2021 season will shake out, however, it will include guard Te’a Cooper.
The Sparks re-signed Cooper after an impressive rookie year where she averaged 7 points and 2 assists per game while shooting 45 percent from the field and 34 percent from three-point range.
In one of his first substantial moves in his new role as GM, Derek Fisher felt bringing back Cooper was significant for the Sparks.
“Te’a Cooper joined the Sparks last year under difficult circumstances and took advantage of her opportunity,” Fisher said. “We’re excited about the role Te’a can play for us on both the offensive and defensive end and her potential to be an impact player in this league.”
This continues to be a big year for Cooper, who not only got a new contract with an elite team like the Sparks, but also got engaged to former Los Angeles Lakers champion and current Philadelphia 76ers center Dwight Howard.
She also signed an endorsement deal with Jordan Brand led by NBA Hall of Famer and current Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan. Cooper was one of five WNBA players who signed with Jordan Brand.
She was very excited about partnering up with Nike’s Jordan Brand.
“It’s Michael Jordan, people go crazy about these shoes, people go crazy about him,” Cooper said. “Everything has to go through him, so to have him pick me as one of the athletes to be a part of such a prestigious brand, it’s an amazing feeling.”
Cooper spoke further about how this partnership will have an impact on her on and off the court.
“It puts some energy in your bag, to push yourself harder, to want to be ‘Like Mike,’” Cooper said with a smile. “Just that (alone) motivates you, makes you determined, it makes you want to be better on and off the court. Just to have him believe in me, the people apart of the organization and the brand believe in me, that was just unbelievable to me.”
Cooper is also part of the first Jordan Brand Classic for the women’s side which also features WNBA great Maya Moore.
She’s had quite a year making a name for herself in multiple facets. Hopefully Cooper will continue to exemplify all of the attributes the Jordan Brand symbolizes, most importantly greatness.
